The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Riliwan Disu, has assured the Federal Ministry of Power of a renewed nationwide offensive against energy crimes, including the vandalism of electricity infrastructure and rampant energy theft.
The assurance came when the Minister of Power, Hon. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, led a delegation from the ministry on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The delegation included the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mahmud Mamman; Director of Distribution, Engr. Mustapha Baba-Umara; Director of Energy Resources, Engr. Kingsley Eneh; and the Minister’s Special Assistant, Mr. Martins Olajide.
During the meeting, discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Power to tackle security challenges threatening the nation’s electricity sector, particularly the persistent vandalisation of power infrastructure and widespread energy theft.
Hon. Tegbe appealed for sustained police support in protecting critical power assets across the country, urging the Force to intensify surveillance of strategic installations and strengthen the crackdown on individuals and syndicates involved in sabotage and electricity theft.
Responding, IGP Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding critical national infrastructure, stressing that protecting power installations is vital to Nigeria’s economic growth and national security.
He pledged enhanced collaboration with the Ministry of Power and other stakeholders to bolster energy security, prevent sabotage, and ensure that perpetrators of power sector crimes are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
