The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, today received a high-level delegation from the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration between law enforcement and healthcare professionals.
The delegation, led by NANNM National President, Comrade Haruna Mamman, visited the IGP to deepen inter-agency cooperation and raise concern over the growing menace of unlicensed medical practitioners, commonly referred to as quacks, operating across the country.
According to the association, the proliferation and increasing patronage of such illegal practitioners pose serious risks to public health and undermine the credibility of the medical profession. NANNM therefore called for urgent police intervention to curb the trend and protect unsuspecting citizens.
The meeting had in attendance members of the Force Management Team, the Director, Directorate of Force Medical Services, AIG Nkechi Eze, as well as senior police officers and top executives of the association, including Comrade Bornbless Obasi, Comrade Jama Medan, Mrs. Adeboye Christianah, Mrs. Ampitan Evelyn, Comrade Oluwatoyin Ofere, Mr. Amusa Kazeem, Mrs. Ekong Omowumi, Mr. Olugbade Taiwo, and Mrs. Balogun Omosalewa.
In his response, the Inspector-General of Police commended the vital contributions of nurses and midwives to Nigeria’s healthcare system, describing their role as both professional and humanitarian. He drew parallels between the policing and nursing professions, noting that both demand integrity, empathy, resilience, and a commitment to safeguarding lives.
IGP Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to public safety and trust-building, while urged NANNM to establish stronger communication channels with the Force to enable swift joint action against illegal medical operations.
He further assured the association of the Police Force’s readiness to collaborate in identifying and shutting down unlicensed clinics and practitioners across the country.
