The Federal Ministry of Interior has commissioned an Innovation Hub aimed at promoting creativity, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and improved service delivery within the Ministry.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, described the facility as a strategic platform designed to harness the creativity and ingenuity of staff while advancing the Ministry’s reform agenda.
She explained that the hub would encourage officers to transform recyclable materials, including paper waste and textile remnants, into decorative items, handcrafted artworks, and functional office accessories, in line with the waste-to-wealth concept.
According to Ajani, innovation remained a critical driver of efficiency and productivity in the public service, noting that the initiative will not only support environmental sustainability but also equip staff with entrepreneurial skills and create economic value from discarded materials.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, the Permanent Secretary directed the Director of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement, Mrs. Vera G. Azoro, to establish a structured financial framework for the Innovation Hub. She recommended the creation of a dedicated revolving fund to finance reinvestment, sustain operations, and expand the hub’s activities.
Ajani urged members of staff to embrace innovation as a continuous institutional culture rather than a programme tied to individual leadership.
“The true measure of this initiative is not in its commissioning but in its continuity. You must build on this foundation, strengthen it, and ensure it outlives individual tenures,” she said.
She also stressed the importance of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Units in driving efficiency across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), calling on officers to remain proactive and committed to advancing the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda.
The Permanent Secretary further encouraged staff to maximise the Innovation Hub as a centre for collaboration, knowledge sharing, skills acquisition, and practical innovation while ensuring proper maintenance of the facility.
The commissioning of the Innovation Hub mark another milestone in the Ministry of Interior’s reform programme, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to building a more innovative, productive, efficient, and service-oriented public service.
