The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of Ambassador Stephen Ojo Ogidan, Director in charge of the West African Affairs Division (WAAD), who passed away in Abuja on Saturday, September 27, 2025, after a brief illness.
Ambassador Ogidan, described as a consummate diplomat and patriot, dedicated over three decades of his career to Nigeria’s foreign service. He joined the Ministry in January 2007, following the merger of the defunct Ministry of Cooperation and Integration in Africa with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Renowned for his intellect, strategic acumen, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s national interest, Ogidan played a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements in West Africa. As WAAD Director, he was instrumental in fostering regional dialogue, managing complex diplomatic issues, and advancing integration efforts across the sub-region.
His diplomatic journey included postings to the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Buea, Cameroon, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Lomé, Togo, where he earned a reputation as an effective representative of the country. In 2021, he was conferred with the title of Ambassador-in-situ by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Ministry described him as a “gentleman officer and true patriot” whose wisdom and dedication inspired colleagues and shaped Nigeria’s foreign policy direction.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government extended its condolences to his family, loved ones, and the people of Edo State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
