A new chapter has begun for the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) as its National President, Chief (Mrs.) Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, presided over her first Annual General Convention with a renewed commitment to strengthening the welfare, unity and empowerment of police families across Nigeria.
The 2026 POWA Annual General Convention, held at the Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja, brought together wives of serving and retired police officers, senior police officers, government officials and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting police families and women’s development.
The convention, themed “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace,” focused on promoting resilience, family support, women’s empowerment, healthcare, education and community service.
In his opening remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, congratulated Mrs. Disu on her assumption of office, describing the convention as the first major gathering under her leadership.
The IGP expressed confidence that, with the support and cooperation of members, the new POWA leadership would build on the association’s longstanding legacy of humanitarian service while exploring new opportunities to improve the welfare of police families nationwide.
He noted that over the years, POWA has evolved beyond an association of spouses into a formidable platform for humanitarian interventions, family support and community engagement.
According to him, the association’s sustained assistance to widows, children of deceased police officers and vulnerable families complements the Nigeria Police Force’s welfare initiatives and reflects the values of compassion, empathy and selfless service.
The police chief also acknowledged the enormous sacrifices made by wives of police officers, noting that the demanding nature of policing often requires officers to spend long periods away from home while facing significant risks in the line of duty.
He said the support, encouragement and stability provided by their families enable officers to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with dedication and professionalism.
The IGP urged members of POWA to continue serving as worthy ambassadors of the Nigeria Police Force by upholding the values of integrity, discipline, humility and compassion in their various communities.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to improving the welfare of officers and their families through enhanced support for education, healthcare, skills acquisition, women’s empowerment and other social development initiatives in collaboration with POWA.
Also lending support to the convention, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Mrs. Lilian Oghogho Musa, commended the leadership of Chief (Mrs.) Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu for organising the convention and promoting unity among wives of police officers.
The First Lady described the convention’s theme as timely, saying it reflects the daily realities of women who continue to overcome life’s challenges with courage and resilience.
She encouraged members to prioritise their health and mental well-being, acquire new skills, strengthen one another through collaboration and continue creating opportunities that improve the lives of their families and communities.
According to her, empowering women ultimately strengthens families and contributes to national development.
She congratulated the new POWA leadership for successfully hosting the convention before formally declaring the 2026 Annual General Convention open.
The convention ended with renewed optimism as members pledged to deepen unity, expand welfare programmes and strengthen the association’s role in supporting police families and advancing humanitarian causes across the country.
