Eleven inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, have successfully undergone hernia surgeries, in a landmark effort showcasing the growing capacity of in-house medical teams within Nigeria’s correctional system.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Umar Abubakar, the surgical procedures were carried out by in-house medical personnel as part of the ongoing health sector reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The statement further highlighted the pivotal role of the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose leadership has spurred significant upgrades in infrastructure and healthcare services across custodial facilities nationwide.
“The success of this medical intervention is a clear demonstration of our resolve to enhance inmate welfare and deliver quality healthcare through internal capacity,” the statement read.
In addition to Kuje, other correctional centres such as the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguza, Kano State, have seen similar improvements to their medical units, ensuring the humane treatment of inmates across the board.
The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirmed its commitment to comprehensive inmate healthcare and its contribution to building a just, compassionate, and secure society.
