The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the rule of law and effective justice delivery through closer collaboration with the judiciary.
Sanusi made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, at the High Court of the FCT, Abuja. The visit was aimed at strengthening the existing working relationship between the FCT Police Command and the judiciary in the administration of justice.
The police commissioner commended the cordial relationship between the FCT Police Command and the High Court, stressing that effective policing and justice administration are interdependent and require sustained cooperation between both institutions.
He identified challenges affecting investigative policing in the FCT and appealed to the judiciary for continued support in facilitating the prompt issuance of court orders and judicial authorisations, including search warrants, bench warrants and other legal processes essential for timely investigations, effective law enforcement and successful prosecution of criminal cases.
Sanusi also expressed concern over delays in the prosecution of some criminal cases, noting that prolonged trials often result in extended detention of suspects in police custody, thereby contributing to congestion in police detention facilities.
Responding, the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, welcomed the police commissioner and his delegation, describing Sanusi’s appointment as timely and expressing confidence that his experience would further strengthen security and the administration of justice in the FCT.
Justice Yusuf assured the police commissioner of the judiciary’s continued institutional support to promote efficient justice delivery. He also highlighted areas requiring the attention of the police and emphasised the need for sustained collaboration to preserve the longstanding relationship between the judiciary and the police.
The visit ended with the exchange of goodwill messages, presentation of commemorative gifts and group photographs, underscoring the shared commitment of both institutions to strengthening criminal justice administration, upholding the rule of law and enhancing public confidence in the justice system.
