The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has begun discussions with San José State University on a strategic partnership to expand opportunities for Nigerian students and young professionals in technology, education and diaspora engagement.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, held the meeting with the President of San José State University, Cynthia Teniente-Matson, in California.
A key outcome of the meeting was the proposed Silicon Valley Tech Bridge Initiative, a summer programme that will provide Nigerian students and young professionals with immersive training in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors and medical devices.
The initiative will combine specialised academic coursework with industry exposure through engagements with leading technology firms, including Adobe, LinkedIn and Jabil, as well as participation in Black Engineer Week, where participants will have access to mentorship and networking opportunities with accomplished Nigerian professionals in the diaspora.
Speaking during the meeting, Dabiri-Erewa described the initiative as a major step toward equipping Nigerian youths with globally competitive skills while strengthening the country’s engagement with its highly accomplished diaspora community.
She expressed optimism that the partnership would create new opportunities for young Nigerians to learn, innovate and compete on the global stage.
The meeting also explored the proposed Fulbright Leadership Exchange Programme, designed to promote academic collaboration, leadership development and institutional partnerships between Nigeria and San José State University.
Both parties further discussed plans to create cultural murals on the university campus to celebrate diversity and showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Earlier, Teniente-Matson reaffirmed the university’s commitment to building meaningful international partnerships that promote innovation, educational excellence and global engagement.
The two sides expressed confidence that the proposed initiatives would benefit Nigerian students, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology professionals, while further strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
