The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, on Monday, June 29, 2026, received a hero’s welcome from the management, officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on his return to the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, following a successful outing at the 147th and 148th World Customs Organization (WCO) Council Sessions in Brussels, Belgium.
The warm reception came after Adeniyi secured a renewed one-year mandate as Chairperson of the WCO Council, a significant endorsement of his leadership and contributions to global customs administration. The renewal, granted by member administrations of the Council, further cements Nigeria’s growing influence in international customs affairs.
In a separate show of appreciation, the Customs management team congratulated the Comptroller-General on the recent six-month extension of his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The team presented him with a commemorative souvenir in recognition of his visionary leadership and the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Addressing the gathering, Adeniyi expressed heartfelt appreciation to the management team for the warm reception and their unwavering support, describing the gesture as a reflection of the unity and shared commitment that have continued to drive the Service’s achievements.
“I sincerely appreciate your support. I went to Brussels believing I was going to hand over, but the outcome was different. The Council renewed my tenure for another one year, and I dedicate this achievement to the entire Nigeria Customs Service,” he said.
He noted that the renewed confidence reposed in him by the global customs community was not a personal accomplishment but a testament to the collective efforts and professionalism of officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Adeniyi added that the extension of his tenure by President Tinubu and his re-election as Chairperson of the WCO Council would further strengthen the Service’s ongoing reform agenda, deepen international partnerships, enhance trade facilitation, and improve customs operations in line with global best practices.
The twin milestones have been widely viewed as a strong vote of confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership, both at home and internationally, reinforcing the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to modernization, transparency, revenue generation, border security and the facilitation of legitimate trade.
