Nigeria and Mexico have commemorated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, celebrating five decades of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared commitment to global development.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja said diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United Mexican States were formally established on April 14, 1976, and have since evolved into a stable and mutually beneficial partnership.
According to the Ministry, both countries have sustained cordial engagement at bilateral and multilateral levels, particularly within the United Nations system, where they have consistently aligned on key international issues. The relationship, it noted, is anchored on respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and a shared vision for international peace and development.
Over the years, Nigeria and Mexico have expanded cooperation across several priority sectors, including trade and investment, energy, agriculture, education, culture, and technical exchange. The Ministry highlighted recent efforts to strengthen economic diplomacy through increased private sector participation, diversification of trade, and exploration of emerging opportunities in renewable energy and industrial development.
The Federal Government expressed satisfaction with the steady growth in engagements between both nations, acknowledging the importance of sustained diplomatic dialogue, institutional collaboration, and people-to-people exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties.
“As Nigeria and Mexico mark this golden jubilee, the Ministry reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to further deepening bilateral relations through high-level engagements, strengthened institutional frameworks, and strategic cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” the statement said.
The Ministry congratulated the governments and peoples of both countries on the milestone, expressing confidence that the next phase of the partnership would deliver greater benefits and reinforce South-South cooperation.
