The Managing Director of BYD Motors Nigeria, Mr. Moses Ayom, has expressed optimism that Nigeria can emerge as the leading hub for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and marketing in West Africa through strategic collaboration.
Speaking at an exhibition and demonstration forum for BYD electric cars held at the Tukur Buratai Research Centre in Gora, Nasarawa State, Ayom highlighted the importance of Nigeria aligning with global EV trends. He noted that BYD Motors Nigeria partnered with a Chinese EV company because China has already achieved an 85% EV adoption rate, with a target of becoming fully electric by 2030.
BYD’s Technical Head, Mr. Rhak Argo, showcased two EV models at the event, emphasizing their efficiency. He stated that the vehicles could cover 510km and 610km on a single full charge, which can be achieved within eight hours using a home charging kit. He added that if a user is on Band A, it would cost approximately N14,000 for a full charge, which could last for one week. Argo further disclosed that BYD’s parent company in China plans to establish an EV assembly plant in Nigeria once the brand gains popularity.
The Special Guest of Honour, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Senator Tijjani Kaura, commended BYD Motors for choosing the research centre for the exhibition. He encouraged individuals and corporate organizations to invest in EV manufacturing to boost Nigeria’s economy and green energy sector.
The Chairman of the Tukur Buratai Research Centre, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, acknowledged that cost remain major obstacle to mass EV adoption in Nigeria. He emphasized the research centre’s commitment to collaborating with BYD Motors to explore ways of making EVs more affordable for Nigerians.
In addition to the EV exhibition, the event also featured a display of the Ketti District project, described as “Africa’s First Net-Zero Green City.” Furniture items produced in collaboration with the Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority were also showcased.
With increasing attention on sustainable transportation, Nigeria’s partnership with global EV manufacturers like BYD Motors could mark a significant step toward reducing dependence on fossil fuels and positioning the country as a leader in West Africa’s green energy revolution.
