The Nigeria Police Force has announced the death of Inspector Habila Mangai, who was killed in a tragic road traffic incident while on duty in Imo State.
The disclosure was made in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, on Wednesday, detailing the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
According to the statement, the officer lost his life on April 18, 2026, during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Owerri–Okigwe Road at Amaraku in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area. He was reportedly struck by a Mack truck driven by one Chisom Ajah while carrying out his official responsibilities.
Inspector Mangai, who was attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where medical personnel confirmed him dead. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Police authorities confirmed that the driver involved in the incident, along with the vehicle, has been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department in Owerri for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased officer, his colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command. He assured that the officer’s death would not be in vain and that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The police also used the opportunity to urge motorists to exercise caution, adhere strictly to traffic regulations, and show heightened awareness when approaching checkpoints and other official duty posts.
The Force reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is served in accordance with the law.
