The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that 97 percent of the ambassadors appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have received the approval (Agrément) of their respective host countries, paving the way for them to assume diplomatic duties.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Ministry said the process of obtaining Agrément from receiving countries has progressed smoothly in line with established international diplomatic practice.
According to the Ministry, President Tinubu had assigned 69 ambassadors-designate to various countries following their screening and confirmation by the Senate. Of the total number, 65 have so far been accepted by their host nations.
The Ministry explained that one ambassadorial nominee designated for the Republic of Togo declined the appointment before a request for Agrément was submitted, while the ambassador-designate to Algeria died in April 2026, with the process of appointing a replacement already underway.
It added that only two countries are yet to communicate their acceptance of Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominees, noting that both nations have assured the Federal Government that their consent would be granted in due course.
The Ministry said it remains actively engaged with the relevant authorities in the two countries and expressed confidence that the outstanding Agréments would be received soon.
It further disclosed that the majority of the ambassadors have already arrived in their host countries and presented their Letters of Credence, officially commencing their responsibilities as Nigeria’s principal envoys.
Reaffirming its commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, the Ministry said it would continue to strengthen the country’s diplomatic representation abroad in pursuit of national interest.
