The Nigerian Navy has recorded another breakthrough in its support for internal security operations with the arrest of a suspected member of a notorious vehicle theft syndicate allegedly linked to the theft of more than 50 vehicles across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The suspect, identified as Habeeb Ajadi, was intercepted by operatives of Naval Base Abuja while attempting to leave the FCT during an intelligence-led operation aimed at strengthening the capital city’s security architecture.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly impersonated an Inspector of the Nigerian Correctional Service to facilitate his criminal activities.
The Navy said Ajadi confessed to being a member of a vehicle theft syndicate responsible for stealing vehicles from different parts of the FCT.
Further investigations reportedly uncovered that the criminal network operated across state boundaries, with stolen vehicles allegedly disposed of through accomplices outside Abuja.
The statement added that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with other security agencies to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
In line with established inter-agency procedures, the Nigerian Navy said the suspect, along with relevant exhibits and evidence, has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and prosecution.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with other security agencies in support of national security and maintaining a safe and secure environment for all Nigerians.
