The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has named Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Nuhu Usman as the Commander of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in a move aimed at strengthening coordinated responses to violent crimes across Abuja.
The appointment was approved by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, who said the creation of the unit aligned with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to restructure and harmonise tactical operations nationwide.
According to the Command, the reform involved collapsing multiple tactical units under the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) into a single, more efficient structure. Out of 28 existing units, 23 have been merged, with officers redeployed to various divisions within the Command.
A select number of personnel are to undergo specialised retraining focused on compliance with human rights standards, professionalism, and global policing best practices. Upon completion, they will be deployed to the VCRU to enhance operational efficiency and improve response to violent crimes.
CSP Usman, who joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on July 9, 2012, holds a degree in Biochemistry and has attended several professional courses locally and internationally, including the Liaison Officers Programme in China. He is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
Over the years, he has served in several strategic roles, including Unit Commander, 50 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Kubwa; Sector Commander with the Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering in the North-East; Officer-in-Charge of Narcotics, FCT Command; and most recently, Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-One Chance Unit.
While announcing the appointment, the Commissioner of Police charged the new commander to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability, while ensuring swift and effective responses to violent crimes across the FCT.
The Command noted that the establishment of the VCRU is expected to significantly boost crime-fighting efforts and strengthen public safety within the territory.
