The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to address longstanding pension and welfare challenges affecting retired police officers, pledging direct advocacy at the highest levels of government.
Disu made the pledge on Monday during a meeting with a delegation of retired police officers, where concerns over pensions, gratuities, and post-service welfare dominated deliberations.
He acknowledged that issues surrounding pensions and salaries remain critical and require urgent and sustained attention. According to him, the current police leadership is actively engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting reforms that will improve the welfare of both serving and retired personnel.
The IGP urged retirees to remain patient and cooperative, noting that efforts are ongoing within established administrative frameworks to secure meaningful progress on their demands.
In a key commitment, Disu outlined two major avenues aimed at ensuring that retirees’ concerns receive direct attention from government authorities. First, he disclosed that retirees are encouraged to submit petitions through his office, assured that he would personally escalate such concerns to the President in support of ongoing advocacy for the pension reform bill.
Second, he assured retirees that their constitutional right to peaceful protest would be respected, adding that adequate security would be provided for any lawful demonstrations undertaken to press home their demands.
Beyond pension-related issues, the IGP also announced plans to collaborate with relevant authorities to improve employment opportunities for children of retired police officers during future recruitment exercises, as part of broader welfare support measures.
He emphasized that the dignity, wellbeing, and financial security of retired officers remain a non-negotiable priority for the Force, stressed that the Police institution remain committed to the welfare of its members even after retirement.
The meeting concluded with renewed assurances from the police leadership aimed at strengthening trust, improving welfare systems, and addressing long-standing concerns within the policing community.
