The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has opposed the establishment of state police argued that Nigeria was not ripe for such.
The IGP stated this while speaking at a one day National dialogue on state policing, organized by Federal House of Representatives in Abuja.The Police Chief who was represented at the event by AIG Ben Okolo said the establishment of state police will aggravate ethnic tension, which will lead to divided loyalty in the states.
IGP Egbetokun also called for the incorporation of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Safety Corps (FRSC) into the Nigerian Police Force.
While responding to the general perception that the police has been inefficient, the IGP noted that the Nigeria Police Force is being held back due to lack of adequate funding and equipment.
IGP Egbetokun said that the police lacked basic kits, guns and modern policing equipment in addition to inadequate up-t-date training to tackle emerging security challenges in line with modern policing.
