The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a major restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline, improving operational efficiency, and reinforcing internal accountability across the Nigeria Police Force.
The reform, according to the Force, is designed to reposition the Monitoring Unit to focus more effectively on its core mandate by addressing operational inefficiencies and enhancing its role as a credible internal oversight mechanism.
As part of the reorganisation, the Unit has been streamlined to boost proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across commands, formations, and departments. The new framework is also expected to harmonise key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.
In a key development, the IGP approved the appointment of Aliyu Abubakar as Head of the restructured Police Monitoring Team to oversee operations of the Unit.
Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Police Commands, where he was involved in high-profile investigations and efforts to modernise investigative processes.
The police leadership said the restructuring underscored the IGP’s commitment to entrenching professionalism, discipline and transparency within the Force, with the Monitoring Unit expected to play a more central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards and ensuring accountability at all levels.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the delivery of a more accountable, professional and citizen-focused policing system.
