Niger Police Sensitises Zone B Digital Communicators on Responsible Social Media Use Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Niger State Police Command has sensitised media coordinators, youth leaders and digital influencers across Zone B on the responsible use of social media ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The sensitisation was delivered at a Digital Capacity Building Training for Zone B communication experts, organised by Triple T and held on August 15, 2026, at the Party Campaign Office, Bahago Roundabout, Minna.

The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, was represented at the event by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

The training brought together youth leaders, media handlers, digital influencers, coordinators and other communication stakeholders from nine Local Government Areas in Zone B, with the objective of promoting responsible digital engagement and strengthening public awareness ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during the programme, SP Abiodun delivered a sensitisation lecture under the Inspector-General of Police’s National Digital Responsibility Campaign, stressing the need for citizens and digital communicators to use social media lawfully, ethically and constructively.

He noted that the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public opinion had made responsible online communication critical to peaceful democratic participation and national cohesion.

The PPRO warned participants against the spread of misinformation, disinformation, mal-information, fake news, hate speech, digital manipulation and other harmful online activities capable of inciting public disorder, undermining democratic processes and fuelling political violence.

He also highlighted the potential of irresponsible social media use to aggravate political tensions and encourage thuggery, urging participants to verify information, fact-check claims and respect divergent political opinions before sharing content online.

SP Abiodun encouraged the participants to become ambassadors of responsible digital communication by promoting accurate information and using their platforms to advocate peace, tolerance and issue-based political engagement.

He further urged youth leaders and digital influencers to support efforts towards peaceful, credible and violence-free elections through positive online engagement and civic responsibility.

The training also provided practical guidance on responsible online conduct and the legal implications of activities capable of promoting violence, public disorder and cyber-related offences.

The programme, according to the Command, aligns with the objectives of the National Digital Responsibility Campaign and reinforces the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to preventive policing through public enlightenment, strategic communication and youth engagement.

It also provided an avenue for strengthening collaboration between the police and key stakeholders in promoting peaceful democratic participation, digital responsibility and community safety across Niger State.
