The Nigeria Police Force has taken a major step toward sustainable operations with the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles into its fleet, marking the beginning of a broader green energy transition.
At a ceremony held on April 21, 2026, the Force received three specialized buses donated by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund in partnership with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles. The initiative is aimed at modernizing police mobility while reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
The event drew key stakeholders from both organizations, including NPF-TF Executive Secretary Mohammad Sheidu and PI-CNG & EV Chief Executive Officer, Ismail Ahmed, alongside other senior officials.
Speaking at the ceremony, representatives of the NPF-TF and PI-CNG & EV described the donation as the first phase of a long-term collaboration to overhaul the Police operational fleet. They outlined plans to convert existing vehicles to CNG, a move expected to significantly cut fuel expenses and promote cleaner energy use across the Force.
Beyond fleet upgrades, the partnership will also focus on capacity building, equipping police personnel with the technical expertise required to manage and maintain the new technology.
Responding, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed appreciation for the support, noting that the transition aligns with global best practices in resource management and sustainable policing.
He said the newly acquired buses would enhance personnel welfare and operational mobility, adding that plans are underway to establish in-house conversion centres to ensure long-term maintenance and technological independence.
The event concluded with the formal handover of the vehicles, underscoring a shared commitment to equipping the Nigeria Police Force with cost-effective and environmentally friendly transport solutions as it adapts to evolving energy demands.
