The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Medical Centres Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Gembu, Taraba State.
The Bill, passed on Wednesday, was sponsored by Senator Haruna Manu, representing Taraba Central Senatorial District. It seeks to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act, 2022, to include the establishment of additional federal medical facilities, with Gembu being one of the proposed locations.
Describing the passage as a legislative breakthrough, Senator Manu commended his colleagues for supporting a vision that would drastically improve healthcare access in Taraba State and the wider North East region.
“This is a breakthrough for a region that has long suffered from poor access to quality medicare. People from Gembu and surrounding communities often travel to Jalingo, Yola, Gombe, or even Cameroon for advanced medical services. This leads to financial strain and, in some cases, unnecessary loss of lives due to delays in treatment.”Senator Manu stated.
He added that the establishment of the FMC Gembu would bring much-needed relief by providing modern and accessible healthcare services within the region.
The bill will now proceed to the House of Representatives for concurrence before being transmitted to the President for assent.
