President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi.
The extension, which takes effect from August 1, 2026, will run until February 2027. Adeniyi’s current tenure was originally due to expire on August 1, 2026.
The Presidency said the extension is intended to enable the Customs chief to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative, a key trade facilitation programme aimed at improving efficiency in Nigeria’s import and export processes. It will also provide for an orderly leadership transition within the Service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Board of the Nigeria Customs Service to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and ensure the compulsory retirement of personnel who have attained the statutory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023. The latest extension will allow him to complete ongoing reforms and strengthen institutional succession plans within the Service.
