The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi,has reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced national security, with a strong emphasis on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in safeguarding critical national infrastructure.
Delivering the maiden Strategic Security Lecture Series organized by the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies (IPSDS), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Audi spoke on the topic: “Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure: The Role of NSCDC.”
During his presentation, Prof. Audi underscored the urgent need for technology-driven intelligence gathering, data analysis, and proactive threat response in today’s dynamic security environment. He stressed that AI-powered surveillance and early warning systems could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s ability to detect and prevent threats against vital infrastructure.
“Security in the 21st century cannot rely on manpower alone; it must be powered by knowledge, innovation, and technology,” Prof. Audi declared. “Artificial Intelligence offers us the opportunity to stay ahead of threats and safeguard our national infrastructure with intelligence-led precision.”
He revealed that under his leadership, the NSCDC has prioritized innovation and capacity building, recognizing them as essential tools for modern security operations. Prof. Audi added that integrating AI into the Corps’ operations would enable smarter predictions, faster threat identification, and more efficient responses to emerging risks.
The event attracted a wide array of participants, including academics, security experts, policymakers, and students, fostering robust discussions on the future of national security and the role of emerging technologies.
The lecture series represented a significant step in the NSCDC’s continued collaboration with educational and research institutions to promote peace, security, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
